I had a seamless — or rather, an easy childhood. But my life took a difficult turn when I found myself in a domestic violence relationship, and my trauma began there. Thankfully, the program I was a part of provided immense support, and I met wonderful people along the way, for whom I will always be grateful. As time went on, I began experiencing severe mental health struggles – ones I didn’t want to acknowledge. But one day, I made the decision to change. I committed to my healing and became intentional about my journey. I enrolled in nursing school while working full-time, but my mental health often made it difficult to even get out of bed. I didn’t understand life, but I knew it had to be better than what I was experiencing.
Balancing nursing school, my mental health, and raising a child was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done.
Some days, I had to bring my child with me to class, and many nights, I cried myself to sleep. It was during this time that my caseworker introduced me to Community Connections. I applied and was selected — a truly happy moment. Meeting Ms. Greene and Ms. Cole was a blessing, and their support made a world of difference in my journey.
With the help of Community Connections, many burdens were lifted from my shoulders, and I wouldn’t be where I am today without them. Now, I am a registered nurse, and I’m proud to say that I can afford the life I’ve always dreamed of for myself and my child.
But the journey doesn’t stop here!
